The Photograph That Is Born Twice
Column curated by Dario Sequi

A photograph is not always born when the shutter clicks.
Sometimes it is born before.
For this June 2026 Photo of the Month, I chose a view of Cagliari during the brief season of jacaranda bloom: the purple trees, the Torre dell’Elefante, the Castello district and an afternoon light that returned almost as if by appointment. This is not just an urban view. It is a photograph about waiting. About that quiet point where an image stops being accidental and becomes a small promise kept.
I have long curated the Photo of the Month column for Family’s Notes.
One image each month.
Never by chance.
When is a photograph really born?
I am often asked whether a photograph is more authentic when it happens by chance or when it is deliberately sought.
I do not think the answer belongs entirely to either side.
Sometimes the image arrives without warning.
Sometimes it asks to be reached.
That is what happened while I was crossing the road along the waterfront. I was not looking for a photograph. Or perhaps I was, without knowing it yet. My gaze was stopped by a low, gentle light, one capable of touching the flowering trees and turning them into a natural frame.
Behind that intense, delicate purple stood the Torre dell’Elefante and Castello. Stone, history, colour. Everything seemed held in balance.
As only certain spring afternoons can do.
Why did I not take the photograph immediately?
The frame was already complete.
Traffic, however, allowed no space. I could not stop. There was no material time to do what the mind had already done.
Sometimes the photographer must perform the hardest gesture: not taking the picture.
Observe.
Remember.
Postpone.
I looked at the time.
It was 18:35.
From that moment, the photograph stopped being a fortunate encounter. It became an appointment. With a place, with a light, perhaps also with a quieter part of the eye.
What happens when chance becomes waiting?
On the way home, the image kept working.
I was already thinking about where to park.
Which route to take on foot.
The exact point from which to stand.
Everything had been imagined. Measured. Built.
And still, that was not enough.
Because photography is never only a project. It needs a margin. It needs that share of luck that no preparation can guarantee. It needs the light to agree to return.
Light cannot be owned.
It can only be respected.
The following day, after a day that had begun at dawn, that thought was still there. Not as urgency. More like a note held in suspension.
At 18:35, I had to be there.
Why does Cagliari sometimes look like a painting?
When I returned, Cagliari still had that grace.
The jacaranda was in full bloom. Its purple did not cover the city. It revealed it.
Castello rose in the background with its ancient measure. The Torre dell’Elefante did not dominate the scene. It held it still. It has stood, in stone, since 1307. It does not need to raise its voice. The pastel-coloured houses seemed placed one upon another, as if time itself had arranged them patiently.
In that moment, I felt the city allowing itself to be seen without defence.
Cagliari knows how to do this.
To hold together stone and flower.
Memory and light.
Verticality and softness.
It is not a beauty that shouts.
It is a beauty that remains.
The question that stays
This photograph was born twice.
First as intuition.
Then as waiting.
Perhaps it is born a third time now, in the eyes of those who meet it without having lived those two afternoons.
In the end, happiness was all there. In having respected an appointment. In having imagined it, waited for it, searched for it. And in having received again, like a gift, that small moment of chance that no precision can command.
Perhaps photographing also means this.
Arriving on time for an appointment we did not set ourselves.
